Cuba, AL is a collaboration between Daniel DeVaughn and Wes Frazer. The writer-photographer pair took multiple trips to Alabama's Black Belt, a region most well-known as the setting and subject of James Agee and Walker Evans's classic lyric-ethnography, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Cuba, AL is a documentary-love-letter to a beautiful, at times surreal, place, where the majority of inhabitants live in poverty, struggling for simple daily subsistence while maintaining a culture almost erased in most other parts of the country. More installments of our larger Black Belt Project will be forthcoming in the near future. This is the first.
