| I didn't move to Harrisburg, PA, with the intention of remembering My Idea of Fun. That seemed counterproductive. Unhealthy. Frustrating. Over with. We are what we were, I told myself, so I wasn't going to talk about it. But I met Zach Spellman at a show a few days after I got here. His turf. He opened the door for me at my first local show as a local. He told me where to get the cheapest, closest six pack. In what I now know to be a rare full band performance, Zach and company opened the show. People crowd surfed in a coffee shop. After his set, it took a while to get him alone. His turf. They covered Devil Town. No reference to the Bright Eyes version, so I knew Daniel Johnston could break the ice. We talked craft and insanity. Then he talked about how an artist's body of work can be greater than the sum of its parts, a concept which had long fascinated and alienated him, and we segued into talking about his project, Indian Burn. He related his process, output, and intentions to a flea market. He described the thrill of the find. Searching through seemingly endless racks and stacks of nobody's nothing specials. Family portraits of families you don't know. Piles of everything that shouldn't make sense together. Bibles and handcuffs. Old smells. New sequels. That special something priceless you find after someone thankfully threw it away. That magic moment where you connect to yourself through a stranger's letters home.
